Musical Septet

This week’s topic is ஏழுள் ஏழு

A recent arangetram here took to the format of explaining the song that would be performed before the actual performance. Personally, I felt, this helped the audience connect a lot more to the performance and once we understand something we appreciate it better. So how does this align with this week’s topic? Immediate connection that we arrive at when presented with the topic is the seven swarms. If a civilization has literature, music and dance are must-haves too. That said, what form of music does Tamil literature prescribe?

Tamil literature like தொல்காப்பியம், சிலப்பதிகாரம் does throw some light on the octaves in their music. பண்கள் was synonymous with music. The Sangam period did have literature that was written to describe the grammar of music.

Their classification of the octaves were also seven and following is how they derived their notes.

Splitting these octaves to svarams gives us follows:

The common theory of how these notes got their names from sounds of various animals have also got some Tamil literature evidence to it.

Sampurna is said to have all seven notes in the ascending (arohanam) and descending (avarohanam) scale. The corresponding Tamil equivalent was ஆரோசை and அமரோசை. Shadava is said to have 6 notes and was called as பண்ணியல் in Tamil music. Audava is said to have 5 notes and was called as திறம் in Tamil music. Svarantara is said to have 4 notes and was called as திறத்திறங்கள் in Tamil music.

This is beautifully putforth in a venba as:

People who took music as their profession used to play the instrument named பறை and யாழ் was used purely by performance artists for entertainment. Tholkappiyam refers to yazh as நரம்பின் மறை.

One of the most interesting things that we could learn from Tholkappiyam is the way they related the land types with the music scales.

Penta Tonic scales are most popular in the western and Chinese world of music. Famous and most common Carnatic raga on this scale is the ever beautiful mohanam. Surprisingly, Tamil music has lot of verses set on this scale and is also called as மோகனம்

If we were to do a one-on-one match to the Carnatic music grammar and Tamil music grammar, few examples would be:

Harikambhoji
Natabhairavi
Hanumatodi
Shankarabaranam
Karaharapriya
Thodi
Kalyani

72 Melakarthas

Septet has definitely been influenced, which way is an interesting research to take up! :)
